Review: Crimson Peak

Another Jessica Chasten film?! She seems to be in everything at the moment! So is Crimson Peak everything it's cracked up to be?

Crimson Peak
15 | 1h 59mins | horror

Aspiring author Edith Cushing (Mia Wasikowska) meets the mysterious Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston) whilst he is visiting her father looking for investors for his invention that will revolutionise the mining at his home, Crimson Peak. After her Fathers untimely death Edith accepts a marriage proposal from Thomas and returns with him and his rather suspicious sister (Jessica Chastain) to Crimson Peak. However the crumbling mansion is hiding many secrets and an ugly history that Edith comes to learn from the help of some scary ghosts!

My Thoughts

I have to say the most recent films in the "horror" genre I've seen have really impressed me by having one continuous theme - they don't contain cheap jumps! This film has a gritty story, it did in some places feel a bit stagnant and slow but it also managed to be chilling and down right creepy. I found the directing to be good and the acting generally very good (especially you, the dashing Tom Hiddleston) but it was the cinematography that was particularly good! Of course the remote location of Crimson Peak with that crisp white snow being stained red was always going to look stunning!
I'd say given the current selection of films out at the cinema this shouldn't be top of your list (that should be the Martian!) but it's well worth a watch, especially if you're a fan of (somewhat, ghosts aside) realistic horror.
