A Real World Treasure Hunt!

October 12, 2015

Now that I'm officially in between jobs it was time to give a new hobby a try, this weekend my boyfriend and I decided to give Geocaching a go and we were pretty surprised at how much we enjoyed it!

So what is Geocaching?

I first discovered it on the National Trust's Website. Geocaching is basically is treasure hunt for the digital age! People all over the world have hidden little containers, which usually have a log book inside, when you find the container you sign the log and record on the app that you managed to track it down! sounds simple right?

Our very first find, the log book was hidden inside this sneaky fake log!

How does it work?

The app uses the GPS on your phone to let you know when you're in the right vicinity of the cache and along with the containers description and perhaps a hint from the person who placed you'll hopefully be able to track it down with ease!

The caches comes in various sizes and styles, so far we've only tracked down the traditional caches which are a simple container with the log book inside but there are all sorts of types you can find including; Earth caches which will take you to an area of significant geology or history and Multi-caches which make you follow a series of clues before you find the log!

Containers can be any size and some hiding places are very clever indeed!

We had a great time yesterday tracking down three local caches and it's really very rewarding when you can tap on the app that you've found it and that smiley face appears! We'll definitely be heading out again soon to track down a few more.

How do I give it a go myself?

If you fancy having a go it's free to create a profile on the Geocaching website  and we have downloaded the free Geocaching Intro app which should be enough to give you a taste of the experience! The full app is available for £7.99 and I'm sure it won't be too long before we upgrade.

In the mean time this is such a great way to get outside and explore your local area in a new and exciting way. What's even more lovely is that it's a great activity for anyone of any age to take part in!

I'd love to know if any of you out there are already pro-cachers or if you're going to be giving it a go!

Happy hunting!

**I have no affiliation with National Trust or Geocaching, we just really enjoyed it and wanted to spread the word!! **
